NCI Launches Menu Awareness Drive to Enforce Menu Transparency with Safe Nutrition Seal and Star Ratings

`India Moves Toward Transparent and Healthier Eating: Nutrition Council of India Launches Nationwide Nutrition Awareness Campaign on 7th June``

In a landmark step to promote healthier and more informed food choices, the Nutrition Council of India will officially launch a Nationwide Menu Nutrition Awareness Campaign on 7th June 2025. This public health initiative aims to raise awareness among restaurants, cafes, food courts, and cloud kitchens across India about the importance of displaying nutrition charts, calorific values, allergen warnings, and basic food safety guidelines clearly on their menus, both offline and online.

This campaign is a direct response to the growing burden of diet-related diseases and lifestyle disorders in India. Despite the FSSAI mandate that came into effect on 1st January 2022, which required food establishments to provide caloric values for food items, widespread compliance remains limited. Many consumers continue to make food choices without essential nutritional information, compromising their health unknowingly.

The Nutrition Council of India is determined to bridge this gap by guiding food establishments to implement standardized nutrition information. The goal is to ensure consumers are empowered to make healthier decisions through transparent and easy-to-understand data on calories, macronutrients, and allergens.

As part of the initiative, NCI will also introduce a Safe Nutrition Seal, a mark of compliance that will be awarded to food businesses adhering to recommended nutrition display and hygiene standards. Along with this seal, a Star Rating system will be introduced to encourage food service providers to maintain high standards in public health responsibility.

Dr. Kshitij Bhardwaj, Chairperson of the Nutrition Council of India, emphasized the campaign’s significance, stating:

“This initiative is about restoring trust and responsibility in the food sector. By promoting informed food choices and nutritional transparency, we empower consumers and elevate public health standards nationwide.”

With this nationwide rollout, the NCI Food Safety Squad will actively engage with food operators, industry stakeholders, and the public to ensure that safe, hygienic, and nutritionally accountable food becomes the norm in India’s food service ecosystem.
